Houseplants are a beautiful addition to any home and can breathe fresh air into your space. However, if you’ve just started raising indoor houseplants, you may feel confused about what humidity is best to make your plant thrive. Don’t worry, read on to discover how to make sure the humidity in your environment is just right for your houseplant.
Humidity Levels
The perfect humidity level changes depending on which plant you have. Often, indoor spaces typically rest at a humidity level of around 20-40%. There are a few plants that don’t need a lot of moisture such as succulents, spider plants, cacti, and yuccas, so the good news is that these will need less maintenance to thrive in low humidity. This means that they will likely be fine in the average home environment.
Typically, the majority of houseplants seen in the UK are originally from tropical regions of the world. This means that they would be unlikely to thrive at humidity levels of 20-40%. Tropical plants can prefer levels up to 80%, which is great for a greenhouse but can be too high for a comfortable home space. The goldilocks of humidity levels then appear to be around 40-60%. This level is best for most plants and vegetation, although some plants in their vegetative state may need a bit more moisture, but shouldn’t require levels of more than 70%.
How will I know if this humidity level is right for my plant?
There’s no need to panic though if you feel unsure because our plants have their own ways of letting us know what they need. These clues can be seen on their leaves – for example, the leaves may go yellow/brown, droop, become dull or snap easily. Also, some hints are a tad more subtle too. Your plant could start to wilt and begin browning on the stems, or it could show slow or little growth. If you notice any of these indicators then this may be your plant letting you know that it requires a higher level of humidity.
It is worth noting that some of these signals may occur when your plant isn’t receiving enough sunlight or is receiving too much harsh sunlight, so this is also worth investigating too.
Are there any other ways to help my plant grow?
If you’re looking for a way to help your plant grow, then it is worth considering a raised plant stand. These can be used to make sure your houseplant is exposed to more sunlight and kept out of dark areas. These stands improve the amount of light and oxygen that your plants receive and help them to thrive. As plants need to be able to photosynthesise, it is important for them to be in the right place to get as much sunlight as they need.
When ordering through Ayria, you also receive a free spray bottle too! Spray bottles can be used to mist your plants, which also helps to boost humidity quickly. Misting helps your plants stay hydrated through the soil and the leaves, as well as creating more moisture in the air for them to absorb. Our houseplants are scientifically proven to help our mental health as well as enriching our environments around us, so it is lovely to think that we can nourish them back in return.
